Kihei

Kihei is one of the most popular places to stay on Maui, lauded for its countless golden beaches, affordable accommodations, dining, and proximity to Kahului Airport. Located on Maui’s sunny south side, Kihei is one of the fastest-growing communities on the island— home to about 22,000 residents. Until the 1970s, Kihei was a marshy, sparsely-developed fishing village of about 1,600 people. But the town boomed with development once folks started catching on to Kihei’s sunshiney beaches and vacation appeal. Yet, despite Kihei’s rapid growth and influx of tourism, the town still retains its friendly, laid-back, local spirit.

With six miles of sandy beaches and nearly 300 sunny days a year, life in Kihei revolves around the ocean. When conditions are calm, snorkelers bob around Keawakapu Beach, beginners paddle out for surf lessons at Cove Park, and boat tours zip out of Kihei Boat Ramp towards Molokini. When humpback whales visit Maui en masse in winter, Kihei’s beaches and condo balconies become whale-watching hubs. If the fierce tradewinds claim the seas, vacationers can retreat to one of Kihei’s many bars— like Maui Brewing Company or South Shore Tiki Lounge— or spend time at Kihei’s beach volleyball courts, roller skating rink, and golf courses.
