Hale Ulu Lulu Cottage

Romantic Quaint 1 Bedroom Cottage 3 Miles from Hana Town

Hale Ulu Lulu is an elegant one bedroom, one bath cottage  just 3 miles from Hana town. This guest house has warm tropical colors, original local artwork, Hawaiian antiques and Polynesian exotica. The furnishings are classic and comfortable with a Missionary antique and Asian influence.

You will be delighted with the beautiful Brazilian Mahogany floors, vintage feeling bath with dual sided claw foot tub, granite kitchen counters with Koa wood bar counter and trim accents. Between the bedroom and living area is a sliding panel, framed and covered with rare Tapa cloth, allowing you to relax in bed to the incredible view or, when closed, to have complete privacy from the rest of the house.

Hale Ulu Lulu means “house sheltered by the breadfruit trees” named for the ancient Ulu or breadfruit trees which surround the cottage. Originally built in the early 1900’s to house the managers of the Hana Sugar Plantation, Hale Ulu Lulu is one of the few remaining original plantation houses in Hana.

The cottage was completely restored in 2004-2005 with meticulous attention to historic detail while providing every modern convenience. Hale Ulu Lulu was designed as an open and airy 900 square foot layout with spectacular ocean and pastoral views from every room.

It is a unique piece of Hawaiian history, perfect for a romantic getaway.

Both guest houses have stack washer/dryers, tub and shower combinations and enjoy the convenience of “on the grid” electricity, telephone, wifi, cable and water. The other cottage on property is the Hana Manu Cottage with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, great for 2-4 people.

The Property

The cottage sits on the The Guest Houses at Malanai property. The property was named after what the ancient Hawaiians gave the gentle breeze that often cools the tropical days in Hana. The guest houses sit on nearly two acres of tenderly landscaped grounds and are nicely set apart, each with unobstructed ocean views. The cottages have been designed and decorated to have a distinct style and personality.

Each home has it’s own yard and outdoor setting for the private enjoyment for guests. You will enter into a setting of gracious lawns and verdant tropical foliage.

Equal to the unsurpassed quality of these guest houses is the excellent location. Malanai is located in the Maka’alae District, conveniently just three miles south of Hana town. Maka’alae is known as one of Hana’s premiere areas, as it enjoys gentle breezes (resulting in fewer mosquitoes!), more sunshine and absolutely gorgeous views of the ocean and famous Hana landscape.

The property borders the Maka’alae pasture, a pristine stretch of land along the majestic coastline belonging to the Hana Ranch. This is the perfect place for long walks along the ocean and coastal bluffs, playing in tide pools or surfing at “Sandbars”. The world famous Hamoa Beach and the breathtaking Waioka (Venus) Pool, two of Hana’s greatest treasures, are both just a fifteen minute walk or two minutes drive away.

At night you will gaze at a magical canopy of stars while listening to the sound of the waves on the shore.
