When researching where to stay on Maui, you’ll hear about the “west side” a lot.
Maui’s west side draws in visitors with its golden-sand beaches, epic activities, and resorts centered in the towns of Kaanapali and Kapalua. If you’re booking a trip to West Maui, chances are you’ll end up in one of these towns.
Both Kaanapali and Kapalua have a ton to offer — think sunset views, adventure activities like ziplining and snorkeling, and world-class restaurants. But each town has a very different flavor.
So, how do you choose between the two? What makes each unique?
Let’s break down the key differences between Kaanapali and Kapalua so you can make an informed decision — and tailor your stay to the Maui trip of your dreams.

Kaanapali vs. Kapalua: Where Should You Stay?
• Kaanapali •
Kaanapali Quick Facts
- Kaanapali is the second-most-popular visitor destination in Hawai‘i, after Waikiki.
- Three miles of golden beach, split into two sections by Pu‘u Keka‘a (Black Rock). The majority of activities/shopping/restaurants are centered on the south side of the beach.

Atmosphere
Kaanapali has got it going on. There’s always something happening — always something to do, always a new person to meet — especially on the southern end of Pu‘u Keka‘a.
This area is all connected — you can step off a boat tour and into an oceanfront restaurant. You can grab a coffee at Whaler’s Village and walk to your surf lesson. You can snorkel with the turtles at Pu‘u Keka‘a and 20 minutes later sip a mai tai and listen to live music at Hula Grill.
Kaanapali is an ideal spot for families who want their vacation to feel seamless, or for couples and young travelers who want to be in the mix of action.
Meanwhile, north Kaanapali is a little more laid-back. There are still restaurants, activities, and plenty of people, but it’s a little less concentrated. Stay here if you want to be close to excitement but have a quiet place to retreat to after a long day.

Where to Stay in Kaanapali
Kaanapali is home to luxury resorts like the Hyatt and Westin, but there are also smaller condos and resorts without an exorbitant price tag. This includes properties like the Kaanapali Alii and The Whaler. These come with benefits that resorts don’t offer, such as kitchens and in-unit laundry.
Expect to pay a premium to stay in Kaanapali. Deals do exist, though! Booking directly with the property usually offers the best rate.

Things to Do in Kaanapali
Activities are virtually endless. Here’s a list of just some of the things to do in Kaanapali:
- Snorkeling: Rent gear and head to Pu‘u Keka‘a or Kahekili (North Kaanapali Beach) for the best snorkeling. Keep hazards like swell, current, and visibility in mind.
- Surfing: Take a surf lesson at Kaanapali Point.
- Golf: Kaanapali has two approachable golf courses.
- Dine: Some of Maui’s best restaurants are in Kaanapali — set on the ocean, no less.
- Shop: Whaler’s Village is one of Maui’s premier shopping centers, set in the heart of Kaanapali.
- Go to a luau: There’s a luau happening somewhere in Kaanapali on any given night.
- Boat tours: Step off the sand and onto a catamaran. Yes, it’s that easy in Kaanapali.
- Parasailing (summer only): Soar high over the Kaanapali Coast — offered in summer months only so as not to disturb visiting humpback whales.
- And more…

Do I Need a Car in Kaanapali?
Not necessarily. Kaanapali is pretty connected.
There’s a walking path that runs the length of the entire beach (5.5 miles round trip!). There’s also a regular trolley with multiple stops along the north and south sides of the beach. Everything else is within easy walking distance of each other, especially if you’re staying near Whalers Village (The Whaler is right next door!).
Plus, with all the activities we just mentioned, you won’t need to go far to have fun.
A car is recommended if you wish to explore the rest of the island, as public transportation and rideshare services can be iffy.

• Kapalua •
Kapalua Quick Facts
- Set on the northern portion of West Maui: cooler, greener, and with more passing showers.
- Home to Kapalua Bay, 2018’s “America’s Best Beach.”

Atmosphere
Kapalua is luxe, peaceful, and downright stunning. Unlike Kaanapali, there is only a smattering of hotels and villas here — all tucked along lava rock points and stretches of warm sand.
Rather than jam-packed fun, Kapalua is more elevated: think oceanfront prix fixe restaurants, PGA golf courses, and world-renowned spas. It’s a great destination for romantic getaways or discerning travelers.

Where to Stay in Kapalua
Kapalua’s properties are sprawling and luxe. Two resorts call Kapalua home: the Montage Kapalua Bay and The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. Both are as luxe as they come, with elevated restaurants, high-end spas, spilling infinity pools, and amenities galore.
Condos are also an option. Units like the Kapalua Bay Villas – The Pearl 20-B2 come with some of the best views on the entire island, plus a gourmet kitchen and an interior that even designers envy.

Things to Do in Kapalua
Kapalua is more refined than Kaanapali, but there is still plenty to do for all types of travelers.
- Snorkeling: Kapalua Bay offers easy, protected snorkeling. Maui’s star for snorkeling, Honolua Bay, is mere minutes away.
- Dining: Merriman’s is one of Maui’s best restaurants and overlooks Kapalua Bay.
- Beach Hop: Four sandy beaches are within a stone’s throw of each other: Napili Bay, Kapalua Bay, Oneloa (Ironwoods), and DT Fleming.
- Golf: Two world-class golf courses with epic views; it once hosted an annual PGA tournament.
- Ziplining: Soar over valleys and walk the longest suspension bridge in Hawaii. Kapalua Zipline’s HQ is in the heart of Kapalua Resort.
- Village Walking Trails: Explore a network of walking trails around the Kapalua Resort.
- Napili Farmers Market: Shop for local produce and gifts and connect with the West Maui community.
- Kapalua Coastal Trail: Coastal walking trail that winds along lava rock points and past sandy beaches with beautiful ocean views.

Do I Need a Car in Kapalua?
We recommend renting a car if you are staying in Kapalua.
Some properties offer a shuttle service within the Kapalua Resort. Though it’s a convenient amenity — and a great way to get to dinner and back — this area is easier to navigate by car.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore beyond the resort. Attractions like Honolua Bay, Nakalele Blowhole, and Kaanapali are just a few minutes’ drive from Kapalua.

Ultimately, whether you choose Kaanapali or Kapalua depends on the experience you want for your Maui vacation. Kaanapali offers convenience, endless activities, and a fun energy, while Kapalua delivers luxury and natural beauty. No matter where you stay, you’ll be treated to stunning beaches, excellent food, and unforgettable moments!
