Maui bed and breakfasts can be a great alternative to high-priced resorts. And they offer a glimpse into everyday life on Maui.
By “bed and breakfast,” we don’t mean a condo or house on Airbnb. We’re talking about traditional bed and breakfasts, where you’re welcomed into someone’s home or property and served breakfast each morning.
The following Maui bed and breakfasts are owned by local residents. Each property has something unique about it – and all help you connect with other travelers and tune into Maui’s slowed-down pace. Here are some of our favorite Maui B&Bs.
Aloha AKU Inn and Suites
Aloha AKU Inn and Suites is one of Kihei’s best-kept secrets. Here, you can enjoy a trifecta of luxuries: a tranquil beachfront condo, personalized B&B service, and a perfect location.
Each of Aloha AKU’s five spacious units features a living room, a kitchen, and a private entrance. Staying here is like having your own Maui beachfront condo! Plus, the owners live on-site, and the staff is always available to help with whatever you need (and serve an in-room continental breakfast each morning).
Beyond the units, you can also dip in the pool and hot tub, use the free SUP boards and bikes, or explore common areas like the library.
But the location is what makes this B&B so unique. Aloha AKU Inn is nestled between a nature reserve and a quiet beachfront – giving the property a secluded, tranquil feel. Yet Aloha AKU is only a stone’s throw from grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and bars. This property strikes the perfect balance between seclusion and convenience.
Iao Valley Inn’s Orchid & Palms Rooms
Would you consider staying away from the beach on your next Maui visit? Well, maybe you should – at least for a few nights. Enter the Iao Valley Inn — located off-the-beaten-track in the lush environs of Iao Valley.
This charming B&B has only two attached rooms, guaranteeing tranquility and privacy. Plus, the hosts, Bob and Tamara, are lovely people and cultivate a great guest experience.
You’ll wake up each morning immersed in nature, with glowing green mountain peaks and a rushing stream outside your window. You’ll also be treated to a complimentary continental breakfast with coffee, pastries, and local fruit.
Some of Maui’s best hikes and attractions are just a short drive away, like Iao Valley State Park, Waihee Ridge Trail, and Waihee Coastal Dunes.
And if you’re a foodie, Wailuku is the place to be. Some of Maui’s best mom-and-pop hidden gems are clustered in this area. (Don’t miss Stillwell’s, Sam Sato’s, or Tiffany’s.)
While this isn’t your typical beachside experience, never fear. Popular beaches are only a 15-minute drive away.
Dreams Come True on Maui
As its name suggests, dreams come true at this South Maui B&B. If you’re looking for a taste of local life in Maui, look no further.
This charming B&B is nestled in the hills above Wailea and offers three accommodation choices — two private-entry suites in the main house and a standalone ocean-view cottage. There is also a communal BBQ and ocean view deck with great sunset views.
Dreams Come True B&B is only a short drive from some of South Maui’s best restaurants, snorkeling, and beaches. And you won’t have to spend a dime on beach gear rentals – the B&B owners have plenty of beach umbrellas, beach chairs, and snorkel gear for you to use.
What really makes this B&B so special is the thoughtfulness and attention to detail by the owners, Tom and Denise. Each morning, they whip up continental breakfasts and deliver them room-service style. And they’re always happy to add special touches, like handwritten welcome notes, fresh flowers, and recommendations for what to do and see.
North Shore Lookout
Most people don’t think of mountain towns and ranches when they think of Maui. But North Shore Lookout is changing that.
This cozy B&B is located a few miles above the Upcountry cowboy town of Makawao. Makawao is a hub for paniolo (cowboys), but it also boasts coffee shops, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and a famous bakery.
Here, you’ll trade the beachfront for hiking trails, farm tours, and dazzling starry nights. And if you do need to dig your toes into the sand, popular north shore beaches like Baldwin, Ho’okipa, and Paia Bay are about a 20-minute drive away.
But you might not even need to wander far from the North Shore Lookout’s property. This B&B consists of five elegantly appointed suites, each with private lanais and cozy seating areas. There is also a communal outdoor fireplace, a pool and jacuzzi, and acres of farmland to explore (be sure to say hi to the kune kune pigs!).
